The allure of civilization games can often lead players to deeply immerse themselves, making it challenging to actually finish a game. This common issue has caught the attention of Firaxis Games, who are now addressing it in their upcoming release, Civilization 7. In a recent interview with Game Developer, creative director Ed Beach shared that less than half of players were able to complete a game of Civilization 6. The slow pace and overwhelming complexity proved to be major obstacles for many players. In response, Firaxis has taken player feedback into consideration and made some changes for the new game.
In Beach’s opinion, the primary objective of the game was to divide it into chapters, which the team referred to as ages. As significant changes are required around the map during the transitions between Ages, they have three Ages planned for navigating through the game. Furthermore, the intention was to reestablish the board, simplify various elements, and change the rules throughout and between each Age.
Each game begins in the Antiquity Age, which lets players explore land but restricts them from crossing bodies of water. The pacing was adjusted to enhance exploration throughout the entire run, not just at the beginning.
As per Firaxis’ usual approach, the upcoming Civilization 7 will adhere to the Rule of Threes. This means that one-third of its predecessor’s content will be carried over, while another third will receive adjustments. The final portion will consist of completely new elements. Notably, the game will include exciting features such as Ages and revamped leader mechanics, which were showcased at Gamescom 2024. This will bring about significant changes for experienced players transitioning into the game. Moreover, a revamped tutorial will be in place to aid new players. On top of that, there will be various options for mixing and matching leaders to add diversity to gameplay.
On February 11, 2025, Civilization 7 will be released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
As a result of the lack of romance options with superhero characters in Marvel’s Midnight Suns when it was released in 2022, some players expressed disappointment. In an interview with Digital Trends, Midnight Suns’ Creative Director Jake Solomon confirmed that romance was never a consideration for the game. This decision has been speculated about whether Marvel or Firaxis made the decision.
During a recent conversation with Digital Trends, Solomon shared his insights on XCOM and Marvel’s Midnight Suns. He mentioned that, despite the popularity of romance in games, it was not a factor in his development plans. This was also the case with Marvel, as he struggled to incorporate it into the game’s storyline. According to Solomon, successful romance elements come from characters responding to the main character’s desires. However, this can be difficult when working with established characters and their defined sexualities. Fulfilling all player fantasies within this framework presents its own challenges.
Here are the upcoming games to watch in May 2024, organized by release date, including a re-release of a GameCube classic and a Warner Bros. crossover fighting game.
We learned which Xbox Game Pass games will be available in April, with Lego 2K Drive being a highlight. This Lego racing game provides a good alternative to Forza Horizon, which is also available with Xbox Game Pass.
Released in May 2023, Lego 2K Drive offers players a unique racing experience where they can construct their own Lego vehicles and compete in multiple open world environments. Combining elements from popular games like Mario Kart and Forza Horizon, it excels in its specific genre, although some may find the microtransactions to be overly aggressive considering its target audience of children. While the development of a new Forza Horizon title has not been confirmed by Playground Games at this time, Xbox fans can continue to enjoy this game until further updates are announced.
