Darksiders prevented the release of Sly Cooper’s time travel game.

Sly Cooper: As part of a recent interview with MinnMax founder Ben Hanson, ex-Vigil Games founders Joe Madureira and Ryan Stefanelli discussed a significant career decision. The decision was between creating a Sly Cooper game with Sony and working on Darksiders with THQ. It’s not hard to speculate which path they ultimately chose.

In the past, Sly Cooper: Shadows in Time, not to be confused with Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, was considered for the PSP. Sony and the developers discussed a game concept where Sly encounters his ancestors and confronts a time anomaly resembling an evil version of himself as he ventures through time.

In addition to Wild West themed levels, Madureira discussed fantasy, medieval, and prehistoric levels, where players could interact with their ancestors.

A passion project for Vigil Games, Darksiders, was the reason the game never progressed. They pitched the game on an old monitor setup during an E3 event. They succeeded in securing a meeting with THQ, who was looking for an IP similar to God of War. As a condition, THQ agreed to create Darksiders if Vigil became an integrated THQ studio.

However, Sony doubted Vigil’s ability to develop a next-gen game despite being interested in the Darksiders prototype. They offered a smaller title for the PSP called Shadows in Time, but Vigil wanted Darksiders. Without a solid deal with Sony, Vigil Games joined THQ. After THQ’s bankruptcy in 2012, Vigil Games closed down. In 2019, Madureira and Stefanelli have relaunched Darksiders: Genesis as Airship Syndicate.

An upcoming Darksiders project was teased during THQ Nordic’s digital showcase, but it’s unclear if it’s a remake, remaster, or new installment.

The developers of Sucker Punch Productions have stated in 2022 that they are concentrating on other projects, rather than new Sly Cooper projects.
